If the Canon ImageRunner 1600 stops working, there are various troubleshooting methods available.
Ensure the copier has the latest software update. Visit www.usa.canon.com using a computer with a network connection to the copier, and choose "Office Equipment" at the top of the page. Click on each of the current links in the following sequence "B/W Image RUNNER Copiers," "ImageRUNNER 1600/2000/2010f" and "ImageRUNNER 1600."

Each of these links is located within the scroll box within the center of the page. Select "Drivers and Software" and choose the latest software update available for the copier. To determine the latest software, check for the latest date under the date column on top of the screen. Read the software license agreement and select "I Agree" to begin the software installation onto your computer. The new software will update your computer's correspondence with the copier.
